The enlightenment thought to promote science and democracy occurred in enlightenment campaigns during the 17th and the 18th century in Europe indeed greatly promoted and contributed to the liberation of people's minds. In the late 19th century and early 20th century, Chinese society underwent dramatic changes, namely Traditional Chinese was fast falling into decay and Western civilization was strongly and rapidly spreading. Many Chinese intellectuals with a sense of consciousness of distresses in that periods launched different kinds of movements to promoting the achievements of Western civilization, aimed at eliminating ignorance, inspiring wisdom, building up a scientific and rational spirit, breaking down the feudal autocracy and finally establishing democracy and freedom of thought in China.

My research focuses on the impact of European enlightenment about 19th and 20th century Chinese democracy. There must be existence of some conditions and environment for the entrance of European democracy to China during these periods. Based upon the developing sequence of European enlightenment thought, I will attempt to analyze the development context and procedures of the European Enlightenment in modern China so as to find out the development trajectory of its impact on Chinese thoughts, study about Chinese democracy in that particular historical conditions under the law of evolution and development, sum up the social background and conditions for the operation of democracy in China. In this research project, the impact of development of democracy in China in the late 19th century and early 20th century to current society in China and future will also be studied. Since culture in different continents could influence each other, thus in the course of this study, I will try to explore how different traditional Chinese philosophies influenced the process of development of the European Enlightenment.
